Pediatric and adult rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases challenge the clinical researcher:
- They affect the population across the lifespan,
- They impact a broad range of patient-centered outcomes,
- They are rarely cured, and
- They often have multiple possible treatment strategies.
VERITY (Value and Evidence in Rheumatology using bioInformaTics and advanced analYtics) Research, a NIAMS-funded P30 (Clinical Research Cores), provides an avenue to advance rheumatologic research and is organized around central scientific themes that can be applied to rheumatic and musculoskeletal (MSK) diseases.
VERITY Research, which began in 2017, is an NIH-sponsored resource run out of the Section of Clinical Sciences in the Division of Rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. VERITY consists of three cores — an Enrichment Core, a Bioinformatics Core, and a Methodology Core (see other articles) – and serves a large Research Community. The Research Community has over 50 individual members including 22 from institutions outside of Harvard and 19 who are trainees or junior faculty. The overarching goal of VERITY is to facilitate advancements in the methodologic sciences that support clinical research within the NIAMS pediatric and adult rheumatic and MSK disease missions.
Each VERITY Core is led by talented faculty with cutting edge expertise. The Enrichment Core offers a one-week “bootcamp” in rheumatic and musculoskeletal clinical research every other May (next given in May 2020). The Methodology Core offers consultations and collaborations on challenging clinical trials, cohorts studies, modeling exercises and study designs. The Bioinformatics Core provides expertise in bioinformatics, natural language processing, pheWAS, electronic medical record studies and a range of other digital health fields.
